Farm leaders call for defeat of cap-and-trade bill

Written by admin on July 18, 2009 – 9:13 am -

By Dawn House,The Salt Lake Tribune Provo » The cap-and-trade bill before the U.S. Senate will put an even greater burden on the backs of farmers who already are strapped with staggering debts, Utah agricultural leaders said on Friday. The nation's financial meltdown has weakened the beef, swine and poultry industries and pushed U.S. dairies to the brink, said Utah Farm Bureau President Leland Hogan on Friday during the midyear conference of the state's largest agricultural organization. Milk prices are at about half of the production costs, forcing dairy producers "to farm away their equity," said Hogan at the end of a two-day session attended by 250 people. The U.S. agricultural industry will fare even worse under the Waxman-Markey bill... more

Golden rule of buying used farm machinery

Written by admin on July 17, 2009 – 12:44 am -

Greg Peterson F.A.C.T.'s Report When it comes to buying used farm equipment you're faced with two main issues: 1. What make/model should I buy? 2. What's it worth? So you spend time researching, talking with friends, shopping around and narrow things down to the particular make and model that is going to work best for you. Now comes the pressing issue - how much are you be willing to pay for it? Definitely easy to fixate on this point. No one wants to pay too much. But here is where I think some folks tend to miss the big picture. They focus on the money spent here and now versus future value. It could seem like I'm splitting hairs here, but I don't think I am. What I mean is this. Every used equipment purchase should be approached with much... more

More Dollars Flowing Into North Dakota Agricultural Economy

Written by admin on July 9, 2009 – 8:50 pm -

According to NDSU, the past two years have seen a notable uptick in economic activity tied to agriculture. The reason is higher crop prices, which have resulted in greater profit for crop producers, but also increased production costs. "The average farm has been generating more sales and spending more in production inputs, capital purchases of machinery and equipment, and family living expenditures," says Andy Swenson, North Dakota State University Extension Service farm management specialist. Total cash expenditures per farm for production inputs, such as fertilizer, chemicals, seed, fuel, repairs and other expenses, increased nearly 60 percent from 2006 to 2008 for more than 500 farms enrolled in the North Dakota Farm Business Management Education... more

Defining ‘Sustainable Agriculture’

Written by admin on July 8, 2009 – 10:07 am -

By Jared Flesher, New York Times Conventional farmers, organic farmers, giant agribusiness companies, environmentalists — all have varying views on what “sustainable agriculture” really means. Perhaps not for long. The Leonardo Academy, an environmental think tank in Madison, Wis., is busy refereeing a debate over a new “National Sustainable Agriculture Standard,” under the guidelines of the American National Standards Institute. One outcome of this effort could be a new “sustainable agriculture” label stamped on food — similar to the way some food is now marketed as organic. It could also create a system that rewards farmers for doing things like reducing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer they use. In late May, members of the... more

Deere to build tractor factory in Russia

Written by admin on July 7, 2009 – 4:13 am -

MOSCOW, July 6 (Reuters) - U.S. farm machinery maker Deere & Co. (DE.N) will start producing tractors in Russia within the next 5-7 years, Deere Chairman Samuel Allen said on Monday, ahead of the arrival of U.S. President Barack Obama for a summit. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last month told a global agriculture summit that his government would devote financial resources to boost its position in world grain markets, creating potential opportunities for industry suppliers like Deere, the world's largest maker of farm equipment. "The investment into the Russian economy will allow us to increase our production and technological capacity which is also in line with the plans of the Russian government," Deere Co. said in a statement. The... more

Smart farms: High-tech wizardry will be on display at Technology Days

Written by admin on July 5, 2009 – 6:28 pm -

By MARV BALOUSEK Dave Hughes, who farms about 2,400 acres near Cambridge and at another location north of Wisconsin Rapids, can surf the Internet while he's spraying fertilizer on his soybean fields. But he hasn't tried it. "I have a hard enough time trying to control the equipment without daydreaming on the Internet," he said. Precision farming," which uses global positioning satellite systems, geographic information systems and other technology, has been around for more than a decade. With precision farming, producers pinpoint the placement of seeds, nutrients and pesticides. By using a computer device in a tractor's cab, farmers can plant straighter rows (which increases yields) and control the precise depth and placement of seeds and chemicals.... more

Machinery Collaboration Saves Money

Written by admin on July 3, 2009 – 8:08 pm -

I ran across this article recently about an innovative machinery sharing arrangement in the UK intended to save money. I thought it might be worth a read. Entering a machinery sharing arrangement is an option for businesses faced with machinery reinvestment where the acreage sometimes cannot justify the sums involved. It often works best on farms already operating similar systems and cropping, but units with different cropping often benefit from sharing because seasonal demands optimise machinery use. And buying inputs through the joint venture, pooling crops and sharing gross margins is a further step which some take after a few years. But the arrangement has to work on many levels, says Tom Gee of Brown & Co, Bury St Edmunds. Personal "First,... more

JOHN DEERE ADDS TWO LARGER MODELS TO ITS 1910 COMMODITY CART LINEUP

Written by admin on July 2, 2009 – 2:55 pm -

LENEXA, Kansas (June 15, 2009)— John Deere expands its lineup of 1910 Commodity Carts with the addition of two larger models — a two-tank 350-bushel, and a three-tank 430-bushel, tow-between configuration. These new models provide the increased capacity for customers to seed and fertilize a large number of acres in less time. In addition, the 80-bushel tank on the 430-bushel tow-between commodity cart can also be ordered liquid-fertilizer capable. "For grain producers concerned about compaction and productivity, these new tow-between carts address both issues. Our customers can seed and fertilize more acres in less time and make fewer stops to refill. This increases their productivity and seeding efficiency," says Aubrey Grove, project manager,... more
